A hockey game for a charity named in honor of the late son of a firefighter

CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) – You’ll have the chance to cool off, see some great hockey and help worthy causes on Saturday as the Cascade Firefighters Association sponsors a charity hockey game.

The puck falls at 7 p.m. at Patterson Ice Center. A host of current and former professional and semi-professional hockey players, including Kentwood’s Mike Knuble, are expected to step into their shoes. All proceeds will go to charities, including one that is dear to the Cascade Township Fire Department.

Ride for Ryan helps raise funds for flags that can be placed on the backs of bikes to make them more visible, as well as to disseminate other bike safety information.

The effort has started by Cascade firefighter Andy Marsman and his wife Stacie. In June 2019, Andy Marsman and his son Ryan were cycling on a path along Cascade Road when a driver who stopped at the intersection did not see Ryan and hit him. Ryan died just five days before he was seven.

“Everyone was brought together because of it. When we chatted among ourselves about who to donate to or who we should fundraise for, their names came up over and over again, ”said Luke McCarthy of the Cascade Firefighters’ Association.

The profits of the game will also benefit Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids and the Cascade Firefighters Association. For more information on tickets, visit the Cascade Firefighters Association Facebook page.
