Cornell forward Max Andreev named ECAC Hockey Player of the Month

ECAC Hockey announced Thursday that senior forward Max Andreev has been named the league’s player of the month for November. Andreev burned his opponents for 12 points in the Big Red’s seven games during the month, rising in December to the nation’s top 10 in points per game at 1.44.

His landmark performance so far consisted of four goals and two assists in the foreground of an 11-3 loss to Rensselaer on November 13. It was Cornell’s first six-point effort in a single game since Ryan Vesce ’04 factored into all of the Big Red’s goal in a 7-0 win over Princeton on November 8, 2003, and it was also the first time that a Cornell player had scored four goals in a single game since Ryan Hughes ’93 on January 29, 1991 in a 5-4 Loss to Boston College.

In many ways, Andreev’s barrage of goals was a mean reversion. After collecting just one assist in the team’s first four games of the season, Big Red’s coaching staff turned to the Moscow native to make sure he wasn’t under pressure.

“We just talked about how he just has to go with the things we’re talking about and go through the process because he’s gotten away from it,” said Mike Schafer ’86, head coach Jay R. Bloom ’77 of men’s hockey at Cornell. “At the Dartmouth game (November 6th) he started doing things and he started cheating a bit. … So (against RPI) it was great that the puck went into the net for him. Some good games from his teammates (too). It’s good to see him rewarded for it.

Andreev is now tied for first in team scoring with junior Matt Stienburg, who has played on the wing of Andreev’s trio all season. Lately, rookie Ondrej Psenicka (four goals in the last five games) has occupied the other wing.

The Big Red are back in action this weekend with their final games of the fall semester, hitting the road to face Saint-Laurent at 7 p.m. Friday before a clash with Clarkson at 7 p.m. Saturday.
