District 3 field hockey: results, tournament summaries

The District 3 field hockey tournament is underway.

Six GameTimePA teams are vying for district gold and a place in the state tournament.

Class 3A

(4 teams access the PIAA tournament)

Wednesday’s first round

(8) Dallastown 3, (9) Ephrata 2: The Wildcats scored on an overtime penalty stroke, beating Ephrata to advance to the quarterfinals of the District 3 Class 3A tournament. Dallastown will travel to the nationally ranked No. 1 seed on Saturday in Lower Dauphin for a 6 p.m. start.

(5) Central Dolphin 2, (12) Red Lion 0: Central Dauphin scored one goal in each half to claim victory over Red Lion in the District 3 Class 3A tournament. The Lions season ends with a 10-7-1 record.

(10) State College 2, (7) Canton of Manheim 1

(6) Central York 2, (11) Warwick 0: Central York received two goals from Victoria Whitehead in their victory over Warwick in the first round of the District 3 Class 3A tournament. Sydney Valdes made three saves for the Panthers in the win. Central York will travel to No. 3 seed Penn Manor for Saturday’s quarter-finals.

QUARTER-FINAL, SATURDAY, OCT. 30

(1) Lower Dauphin 2, (8) Dallastown 1: Dallastown played against seeded and nationally ranked Lower Dauphin in a close loss in the District 3 Class 3A quarterfinals. The two teams fought for a tie at 1 at halftime before quitting. ‘Alexa Shaffer does not break the tie in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats season ends with a 14-7-1 record.

(2) Cumberland Valley 3, (10) State College 0

(6) Central York 1, (3) Penn Manor 0 (2OT): Victoria Whitehead scored at 4:13 in double overtime, leading Central York to a surprise victory over Penn Manor in the quarterfinal of the District 3 Class 4A tournament. Sydney Valdes stopped seven shots to preserve the shutout as the Panthers were outdone 12-2. Central York, the No. 6 seed in the tournament, will travel to the No. 3 seeded Cumberland Valley on Wednesday in the semifinals. The victory also earned them a place in the PIAA tournament.

SEMI-FINALS, WEDNESDAY NOV. 3

(1) Lower Dolphin 2, (4) Wilson 0

(2) Cumberland Valley 2, (6) York Center 0: KK Sauve scored the first goal of the contest for Cumberland Valley in their semi-final victory over Central York in the District 3 Class 3A tournament. The victory was the 600th in Eagles history and propelled them to the championship game against the Lower Dauphin. The Panthers, meanwhile, will meet Wilson in Saturday’s third-place game before moving on to next week’s PIAA tournament.

Wednesday’s first round

(1) Palmyra 3, (16) West Perry 1: The Cougars, the defending and reigning PIAA champions, opened their playoffs with a win over West Perry in the first round of the District 3 Class 2A tournament. Maddie Hudson scored twice and Anna Miller added a goal to lead the Cougars. Palmyra will meet rivals Hershey in the quarter-finals on Saturday following the Trojans 7-0 victory over Daniel Boone in the first round. (9) Daniel Boone at (8) Hershey, 7 p.m.

(4) Mechanicsburg 7, (13) Elco 0: Mechanicsburg took a 4-0 lead over Elco and went from there, earning a first round victory in the District 3 Class 2A tournament. Cam Standish led the way for the Wildcats, scoring three goals. The Raiders’ season ends 12-6-1.

(5) Susquehannock 3, (12) Conestoga Valley 1: The Warriors scored goals in each of the first, third and fourth quarters to claim victory over Conestoga Valley in the first round of the District 3 Class 2A tournament. With the win, No.5 seeded Susquehannock will travel to No.4 Mechanicsburg in Saturday’s quarter-finals.

(2) Twin Valley 9, (15) Catholic Berks 1

(3) North York 3, (14) East Pennsboro 2

(6) Fleetwood 1, (11) New Oxford 0: Casey Lynn Dewald scored midway through the fourth quarter for Fleetwood to claim the first round victory of the District 3 Class 2A tournament. The Colonias season ends with a 10-8 record.

QUARTER-FINAL, SATURDAY, OCT. 30

(1) Palmyra 5, (8) Hershey 0: The seeded Cougars advanced to the semi-final of the District 3 Class 2A tournament with a solid victory over rival Trojans. Anna Miller scored twice for Palmyra in the win. The Cougars will host Mechanicsburg in the semifinals on Wednesday.

(4) Mechanicsburg 5, (5) Susquehannock 0: Mechanicsburg scored four first-half goals in their quarterfinal victory over Susquehannock in the District 3 Class 2A tournament. Anne Manning scored three goals to lead the Wildcats. Susquehannock’s season continues on Wednesday with a consolation game as they host Hershey. The top 7 teams in class 2A will qualify for the PIAA tournament.

SEMI-FINALS, WEDNESDAY NOV. 3

(4) Mechanicsburg 3, (1) Palmyra 1: The Wildcats took a 2-0 halftime lead and won, passing the Cougars in the District 3 Class 2A semifinals. Palmyra will face Northern in the third place game on Saturday. The Cougars’ only goal came from Anna Miller early in the fourth quarter. Three different players have scored for Mechanicsburg who will face Twin Valley in Saturday’s championship game.

CONSOLATIONS

Hershey 2, Susquehannock 0: Hershey scored two goals in the third quarter to break a scoreless first half, passing Susquehannock in a consolation match in the District 3 Class 2A tournament. The victory pushes the Trojans forward to the PIAA tournament while the Warriors will need to win Saturday’s seventh place game against Garden Spot to qualify for the PIAA tournament.

Wednesday’s first round

(8) Township of Susquehanna 1, (9) Newport 0

(4) Hot springs 11, (13) North Lebanon 0: Raegan Eickhoff scored four goals, leading Boiling Springs to a dominant 11-0 victory over northern Lebanon in the first round of the District 3 Class 1A tournament. The Viking season ends with a 7-11 record.

(12) Susquenita 2, (5) Bermudian Springs 0: The No. 5 seeded Eagles lost their first round clash of the District 3 Class 1A tournament to No. 12 seeded Susquenita. The Hawks each scored once in the first and fourth quarters. Bermudian Springs season ends at 16-4

(7) Littlestown 2, (10) Schuylkill Valley 1: Bailey Rucker scored with less than two minutes to go, leading Littlestown to a first round victory in the District 3 Class 1A tournament. Ashlyn Rebert tied for the Thunderbolts in the third quarter after the visitors took a 1-0 lead in the half. Littlestown will face second seed Greenwood in the semifinals on Saturday at West Perry High School at 11 a.m.

(3) Lancaster Mennonite 1, (14) Bishop McDevitt 0 (2OT)

(6) Annville-Cleona 2, (11) Biglerville 1 (Annville-Cleona wins 3-1 on penalty strokes): Grace Francis hit home the winning penalty stroke to send the Little Dutchmen to the quarterfinals of the District 3 Class 1A tournament, knocking Biglerville out. The Canners scored early when Alyssa Smith completed a penalty corner before Annville-Cleona equalized in the third quarter with the stick from Braeten Peters. The Canners’ season ends at 13-7 as the No.6 seeded Little Dutchmen advance to meet No.3 seed Lancaster Mennonite in Saturday’s quarterfinal.

QUARTER-FINAL, SATURDAY, OCT. 30

(12) Boiling springs 3, (4) Susquenita 0

(2) Greenwood 6, (7) Littlestown 0: Greenwood took a 4-0 halftime lead in their District 3 Class 1A quarterfinal victory over Littlestown. Naomi Lyter scored twice to lead Greenwood to victory. The top 5 teams advance in Class 1A, so the Thunderbolts stay alive as they make their way to the consolation round. They will travel to face Annville-Cleona in Wednesday’s consolation round.

(3) Lancaster 2 Mennonite, (6) Annville-Cleona 1 (OT): Ellie Lefever scored 45 seconds into extra time, taking Lancaster Mennonite to a victory over Annville-Cleona in the quarterfinal of the District 3 Class 1A tournament. Braetan Peters scored the only goal for the Little Dutchmen who still have a chance at the state tournament. They will face Littlestown in Wednesday’s consolation round.

CONSOLATIONS

Annville-Cleona 0, Littlestown 0 (Annville-Cleona wins 3-0 on penalties): The Little Dutchmen scored on all three penalty shots and goaltender Ava Wentling allowed no pass, propelling Annville-Cleona into the fifth place game of the District 3 Class 1A tournament. The top five teams in Class 1A advance to the tournament and the Little Dutchmen will face Susquehanna Township in Saturday’s fifth-place game.
