Indian hockey player Deepika has been making headlines since the Khelo India U21 Women’s Hockey League started. She has scored eight goals in three matches in the competition.
India Junior Women hockey The team is engaged in preparations for the World Cup of Junior Women’s Hockey. The World Cup, which was scheduled to be held in December 2021, will now take place in 2022 due to the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
Speaking of the ongoing Khelo India U21 Women’s Hockey League, Deepika said she aims to represent India at the upcoming Olympics.
“This tournament is just the start and there is a long way to go and many dreams for me to achieve. I am focusing on the Olympics and I will be very happy if it is not just me, every player of the team playing today, can compete in the Olympics. We have been playing together for 3-4 years and the bond between us is very good. We continue to cheer on all our teammates during the match, “said Deepika.
Coming from a family of wrestlers, Deepika wanted to pursue her career in hockey.
“There are mostly wrestlers in my family, my uncle, my brother, they are all wrestlers and they wanted me to do this sport as well. But I was determined to play hockey. I want to prove that you don’t have to be in wrestling if you are from Haryana but you can participate in other sports as well, ”added Deepika.
Deepika claimed the team had trained hard and every smallest detail was carefully considered.
“We have been training together at the SAI National Center of Excellence in Bengaluru since 2019 and we are given a diet and all the requirements that we want. Hockey India, too, is helping us in the best possible way. They fill everything we need and I’m grateful to both SAI and Hockey India for doing so much on our trip. ”
“We have the best possible support from the staff ahead of the World Cup. Our coach Erik Wonink, sir, is working particularly hard to prepare us fully for the World Cup of Hockey, postponed until next year, ”said Deepika.
Indian junior hockey star Deepika idolizes Virat Kohli
Deepika started playing hockey in 2011. Speaking about how she started playing the sport, she said:
“I started playing this sport when I was probably 7 or 8 years old. There was immense support from my coach as well as my family. When I started out, I accompanied my brother to the akhada for his wrestling training. Along the way, I used to see a hockey field and immediately fell in love with the game. So I told my parents that I only wanted to play hockey. “
Deepika is a big fan of Virat Kohlithe fighting spirit of and idolizes Captain Indian Test. She said:
“I idolize those who don’t back down in life. Virat Kohli has had a lot of ups and downs in his career as well as struggles and he is now at a big stage in his life. “
