He bent down on one knee and pulled out an engagement ring, causing the New York crowd to roar in delight.
But to everyone’s shock, his partner got up from her seat and left the room.
Boos echoed around the room as the broken man returned to his seat and picked up his empty beer.
And to make matters worse, the Panthers scored moments later.
The video of the awkward moment racked up more than 260,000 views on Twitter in less than two hours.
Last week, a public marriage proposal at a Major League Baseball game also went awry, with the young woman slapping her partner after opening the box to reveal a Ring Pop.
Florida eventually secured a 3-1 win over the Islanders, with Patric Hornqvist, Matthew Tkachuk and Eetu Luostarinen scoring for the visitors.
The Islanders next face the Buffalo Sabers at KeyBank Center on Sunday morning AEDT.
