ROANOKE, Virginia. – The Rail Yard Dawgs rallied with a strong third period, but couldn’t tie against Fayetteville in the dying moments in a 3-2 loss at the Berglund Center on Thursday night. CJ Stubbs scored both goals for the Dawgs and Nick Devito added a pair of assists.

The first period was even throughout the first five minutes, until Roanoke was shorthanded for the first time at 5:39. Although the Dawgs killed the penalty, they lost their footing in the contest and the Marksmen finally opened the scoring at 16:37 on a Shane Bednard rebound. Fayetteville led 1-0 at the first intermission.

Roanoke rocketed out in the second period and tied the game at 5:06 on a Stubbs rebound. The Dawgs nearly equalized moments later, but Fayetteville’s goal was overturned just as the puck was about to cross the goal line. Instead, Roanoke won a power play at 10:24, but conceded a shorthanded goal to Taylor McCloy on a quick counterattack to go down 3-1. A long carom on a Roanoke shot fizzled to Fayetteville’s Taylor Best, who was all alone on the other end of the ice and scored to make it 3-1 with 1:29 to go. second period. This score held until the final intermission.

The Dawgs were once again strong in the third period, beating Fayetteville 12-3 in the final 20 minutes. Stubbs scored on a Roanoke power play with 9:01 left in the period, and the Dawgs had plenty of chances to tie the score. The multitude of chances that occurred with their empty net and an extra forward failed to light the lamp in the final seconds, and Roanoke’s four-game winning streak in the series against Fayetteville came to an end.
