Rowan’s Castagnola Named Region IV Field Hockey Player of the Year – Trentonian
BROCKPORT, NY. – Rowan University Senior Kristiina Castagnola (Voorhees / Eastern) was named Region IV Player of the Year, as selected by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. She is one of six regional winners and is now in the running for the NFHCA National Player of the Year which will be announced on December 16.
She becomes Rowan’s second player to earn this honor as Rachel Galante received in 2018.
Castagnola was the catalyst and the Profs’ leading scorer as they reached the NCAA Final Four for the fifth time in school history. She posted a career-high 44 points with a personal best 18 goals while handing out eight assists. His tally includes three game-winning goals, including one in overtime against No.5 Kean who won the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) championship for Rowan.
The team’s co-captain was a new selection in the first team from all regions and was named NJAC midfielder of the year 2021. Castagnola received All-NJAC First Team honors for the third time and was named to the NFHCA Senior Team and NCAA Championship All-Star Team.
Her career goalscoring tally stands at 111 points, with 45 goals and 21 assists, to place ninth on Rowan’s career goalscoring list for points, while she ranks 11th for career goals. .
Rowan, who was ranked fourth in the nation, reached the NCAA semifinals to reach the fifth Final Four in program history. The Profs set up a 16-game winning streak before falling to future champion and best Middlebury in the semi-finals. Rowan went 18-3 on the year and won his second NJAC Championship in three seasons.
