Spider Hockey scores first, falls in 14th ODU, 2-1

RICHMOND, Virginia – The University of Richmond field hockey team scored first but fell late in a defensive battle to 14th-ranked Old Dominion on Sunday at Crenshaw Field.

Richmond (3-2) hits the road to take on No. 18 Wake Forest on Friday (Sept. 16) at 4 p.m. in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Spiders open the Atlantic 10 game by hosting Davidson on Sunday (Sept. 18) at Crenshaw Field for a contest at 11 a.m. on ESPN+.

After a terrific defensive position from an ODU corner in the first, Richmond jumped at the chance. Winning a corner at 8:29 in the first quarter, Lindsey Frank (Saratoga Springs, NY) scored his team-leading third goal of the season to put Richmond ahead. First-year student Madeleine Curtis (Richmond, Virginia) inserted the ball to the senior Tess Keppel (Baltimore, Maryland) for the stick stop and set up for Frank’s shot.

ODU tied the game with a penalty kick at 19:35 in the second quarter.

The Monarchs scored the eventual game-winner 25 seconds before the end of the third quarter, firing a shot on a rush for the ball in front of goal.

The visitors thwarted Richmond’s attempts in the fourth quarter to possess the ball in UR’s attacking third to claim the victory. ODU held a 9-6 shooting advantage as well as a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners.

Guardian of UR Erika Latta (Midlothian, Virginia) had a season-high six saves.
