MARQUETTE – For scoring his first college goal and getting an assist over the weekend, Northern Michigan University freshman Oscar Geschwind was named CCAA Rookie of the Week on Monday.
The Orebro, Sweden native scored his first career point with an assist on a Vincent de Mey goal in the second period of the Wildcats’ 6-3 win at Ferris State on Friday night. The goal gave NMU their first lead of the game at 3-2.
He also got the first assist on the game-winning goal scored by Mikey Colella at the start of the third period.
Geschwind followed that up on Saturday night with a late second-period goal in NMU’s 7-6 win. It was the fourth of four consecutive goals the Wildcats scored in the second period to give them a 5-3 lead.
He also had four shots on goal over the weekend with a score over five on the ice, the team’s best.
It was Northern’s sixth weekly CCAA award this season, but first for a Rookie of the Week.
Previously Charlie Glockner was named Goalkeeper of the Week on October 18, Trevor Cosgrove was named Defender of the Week on November 8. Colella was Forward of the Week on November 8, Rico DiMatteo was Goalkeeper of the Week on November 15 and Ben Newhouse was Defenseman of the Week on November 15.
